Inventory Management Software
The following is an example of a real inventory system custom-made for a mid-sized company in the UK. It replaced a spreadsheet the company was using which was becoming large, tiresome to update and error ridden, with lots of duplication of information and cutting and pasting necessary.

This inventory system is an intranet application (like a website but internal to the company) which has several advantages:
  • No installation is needed, it can be viewed from any PC in the company (even across different offices in the country) simply by entering an address into a browser.
  • Because it's browser-based it is naturally visually appealing (unlike Windows programmes) and familiar to use.
The technology used is Microsoft ASP.NET / C#. Although there are all kinds of good Web technology out there Microsoft's is excellent, being very fast to develop applications, applications are secure and the technology is reliably supported for the long term as well as being widely used.

The company still uses the application (it was built a few years ago) and it has proved a good solution, allowing then to quickly, accurately and securely add and edit inventory items as well as find items in what is now a large inventory easily and quickly. An attractive printable report can be printed off of various items, e.g. all Dell computers in department X, all digital cameras in use throughout the company, un-used items in department X, etc etc.

The following is a series of screen shots of the application.
